Twelve years ago tonight, my then-boyfriend proposed to me in front of this Christmas tree.
I was living in a tiny apartment in Arlington, VA, and this tall skinny tree just fit in the space.
And now this is our tree; a little bit fuller, in a larger space, and not all the toys around it are mine. Some of the ornaments are the same in both pictures, and some were made a few days ago by our kids. Plus I think there’s a plastic dinosaur hiding in the branches. We still use the felt-and-glitter star my mom made for the Breed family tree when I was little.
We didn’t mark the occasion in any grand way today. But in the light of the Christmas tree, the kids had their first viewing of any Star Wars movie (Episode IV) with us and their Grandpa and Uncle Ben, who just arrived from New Hampshire. It’s been a hard year for all of us, but tonight we were all together, having fun.
We couldn’t have known what we were in for twelve years ago, when to love someone was still more a feeling than an action. I know now how lucky I am that he asked, and I am so glad that I said yes.
I’ll be taking Friday off to celebrate with family. Merry Christmas, dear readers, and I’ll see you next week.
