Spring Beauty, and Two Carnivores

This afternoon I set out in search of the delicate Spring Beauty. I hadn’t seen any yet, but had heard they were blooming in Claude Moore Park, and I was afraid that they might all be bitten by the frost predicted for this weekend. After a short walk, I found one!

But I was so busy looking for flowers that I nearly stepped on this little carnivore:

Snake

Do you see it? The reptile’s body is diagonal across the picture. Here’s a close-up:

A Black-necked Garter Snake, that was probably sunning itself on the path before I came along.

And then finally, from our car, near the South Entrance of the park we got a glimpse of this furry carnivore:

He or she had nothing to say.
