Yesterday while at my parents’ house, Betsy came running inside and announced, “You know that owl that Grandma keeps hearing but she can’t find it? I found out where it lives!”
And she was right! We call this girl Eagle Eyes for a reason. Do you see the owl?
Betsy remarked, “At first when I saw it flying I thought it might be a hawk, but then I saw its head turn around.”
After consulting my Peterson Field Guide to the Birds, I believe this is a Barred Owl. My Mom has been hearing its “who cooks for you, who cooks for you-all,” but has only seen it once, when it was in her southern magnolia tree during the blizzard of January 2016.
I’m glad Betsy saw it, and that I was able to grab Mom’s little camera and catch a few quick pictures for her. I bet she’ll be keeping a much closer watch on that tree when she’s home!
